Report: Fatal Greenwood crash caused by failure to yield

The cause of a fatal crash that killed an Indianapolis woman in Greenwood last week has been released.

First responders were called to the area of Graham Road and Allen Road, near Nestle Waters of North America, at around 2:14 a.m. Aug. 14 for a report of a vehicle crash with entrapment. Initial callers advised there was a car under a semi, according to Greenwood Fire.

The Johnson County Coroner’s Office identified the deceased person from the crash as Irish D. Smith, 32, of Indianapolis.

Greenwood Police say a semi tractor-trailer was turning left onto Graham Road from Nestle Water and was nearly complete with its turn when Smith, who was going south on Graham Road, struck the trailer. The semi driver told police this caused Smith’s car to spin into the grass off Graham Road, according to an accident report.

Smith’s vehicle sustained heavy damage and she was entrapped. The semi had disabling damage to its trailer and had to be towed from the scene, the report says.

Damages from the crash are estimated at anywhere from $50,001 to $100,000, the report shows.
