Greenwood man convicted of sex crime captured after skipping trial

A Greenwood man who skipped his trial for sexual misconduct with a minor has been apprehended.

David Bailey, 37, was arrested on Monday in West Virginia, Sheriff Duane Burgess said.

The sheriff’s office is now working to get Bailey back in Indiana as he prepares to face his sentencing on Sept. 6. Bailey was convicted of sexual misconduct with a minor as a Level 4 felony by a Johnson County jury on Aug. 7 and faces up to 12 years in prison.

The conviction stems from an August 2022 investigation by the Greenwood Police Department. Bailey was reported to have sexually abused a child from 2019 until 2021.

During the trial two weeks ago, evidence was presented by the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office and the jurors found Bailey guilty as charged after only 37 minutes of deliberations, according to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Bailey failed to appear in court for the trial, and a no-bond warrant was issued by Johnson Superior Court 3 Judge Douglas Cummins that day.

Burgess thanked Marion County Sheriff’s Office and the United States Marshals Office Service for their work in capturing Bailey.
