Greenwood to host community band festival

Greenwood has been home to one of the most talented community bands in the area for years.

This weekend, the city will play host to a full day of swingin’ jazz, booming brass and a variety of other styles from community bands from all over Indiana.

The Greater Greenwood Community Band will host its annual community band festival from noon to 8 p.m. Saturday at Greenwood Amphitheater. The event will feature eight different volunteer bands, including five full concert bands, two all-brass bands, and a swing band as groups perform at the top of each hour.

Scheduled performances are:

Noon: Indianapolis Municipal Band

1 p.m.: Lake Area Community Band

2 p.m.: Indianapolis Brass Choir

3 p.m.: GMH Jazz Orchestra

4 p.m.: Crossroads Brass Band

5 p.m.: West Indy Winds

6 p.m.: Hamilton County Community Band

7 p.m.: Greater Greenwood Community Band

Attendees can enjoy hot food from the grill, plus cold drinks and snacks. Free shuttles will be transporting guests and performers between the venue and surrounding parking lots. The Greenwood Amphitheater is located behind the fire station on Main Street in downtown Greenwood. The parking lot beside the fire station provides handicap accessibility.

People are encouraged to bring a lawn chair and a friend. Pets on leashes are welcome. Admission is free, and tickets are not required. Details available at GreenwoodBand.org.
