Johnson County drug roundup targets 59 suspects, 25 arrested so far

Nearly 60 people were targeted in one of the largest drug roundups in recent Johnson County history.

Throughout the day Wednesday, law enforcement from Johnson County and Central Indiana executed a series of narcotics warrants across the county and neighboring areas. Agencies involved include the Johnson, Shelby and Marion County sheriff’s offices and the Franklin, Bargersville, Edinburgh and Greenwood police departments, along with the White River Township and Bargersville Community fire departments, which provided SWAT medics, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office news release.

The operation is part of a “proactive investigation” that has been ongoing for several months, Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess said.

“The collaborative effort among these agencies underscores their commitment to keeping drugs and illegal activities out of our communities,” Burgess said.

Burgess, Franklin Police Chief Kirby Cochran, Greenwood Police Chief Jim Ison and Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner have “forged a strong partnership with the involved agencies to address drug-related issues and major crimes within Johnson County,” according to the news release.

On Wednesday morning, law enforcement began the roundup with 58 arrest warrants and several search warrants. At least 25 of the suspects sought were arrested on Wednesday, with the rest still being at large.

While serving these warrants, Burgess had the opportunity to speak with several residents living near individuals involved in drug trafficking. He said many expressed relief and optimism, hopeful that peace would soon be restored to their neighborhoods.

“It is disheartening to see good, hardworking citizens forced to endure criminal activities in their communities,” Burgess said in the news release. “It is our duty as law enforcement to restore peace and ensure the safety of these areas. The individuals arrested today have chosen a path of unlawful behavior.

“The sheriff’s office, local police chiefs, town marshals, and the prosecutor of Johnson County have made it clear: criminals are not welcome here. If you engage in illegal activities, you will be arrested, you will be charged, and you will go to jail,” he said.
