Excessive Heat Watch in effect Tuesday

An Excessive Heat Watch is in effect for most of the day Tuesday.

The watch is in effect for a large majority of Indiana, including Johnson County, from Tuesday morning through evening. An Excessive Heat Watch is issued when heat indexes are expected to reach or exceed 110 degrees Fahrenheit and not fall below 75 for at least a 48 hour period, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis.

For Tuesday, dangerously hot conditions with heat index values of up to 107 degrees are possible. Locally, heat indexes are expected to reach 102 degrees in Franklin and 103 degrees in Greenwood.

Heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events. Under these conditions, the public is encouraged to drink plenty of water or electrolyte-filled sports drinks, use sunscreen, wear light and loose-fitting clothing, avoid outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day and to take frequent breaks, meteorologists and public safety officials say.

Young children and pets should not be left in unattended vehicles. Car interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes, officials say

People should also check on pets and elderly, officials say.
