Filings: Trump outraises Harris in Johnson County so far

Republican presidential candidate former President Donald Trump has far outraised his Democratic challenger so far this year in Johnson County.

From Jan. 1 to July 31, Trump has raised about $188,809 from Johnson County voters. Democratic presidential candidate Vice President Kamala Harris has raised nearly $41,535 in the same time frame, though she had a shorter time to fundraise since President Joe Biden dropped out of the race on July 21 and endorsed Harris, according to campaign finance reports from the Federal Election Commission.

Harris

The Daily Journal looked at reports for three campaign committees affiliated with Trump and Harris each: Donald J. Trump for President 2024 Inc., Donald J. Trump Republican Nominee Fund 2024, the Trump Save America joint fundraising committee, Harris for President, Kamala Harris for the People and the Harris Victory Fund joint fundraising committee. Those reports showed Trump has overwhelming support across Johnson County and that Harris is making inroads despite the short time frame.

Harris raised $310 million last month, and her campaign entered August with $377 million in cash on hand. Her national totals show donors who once seemed spooked about the prospects for November’s election with Biden are now offering mountains of cash to boost his former No. 2, the AP reported.

As for Johnson County, Harris raised $9,802.44 from July 21 to July 31, a 10-day period. About $31,733 was from before July 21, according to filings.

Trump

Trump, and his campaign and assorted committees said, they took in $138.7 million for July nationwide. His team entered August with $327 million cash on hand, according to the AP.

Trump’s national fundraising totals were likely enlarged by the reaction to the July 13 assassination attempt against the former president during a rally in Pennsylvania, which galvanized some of his supporters, and by his subsequent revealing of his running mate, Ohio Sen. JD Vance, at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

Nearly all of the funds raised from Johnson County voters — about $183,051 — were from before the July 13 attempt on his life. Since the assassination attempt, Trump has raised $5,768 in 19 days, filings show.

Of the 12 zip codes covering Johnson County, Trump has a clear edge in fundraising.

Trump leads in Greenwood, with the 46143 zip code — covering from Center Grove through the city’s south and east sides into rural Clark Township — giving $69,185.73 to his campaign and the 46142 zip code — covering northern White River Township to the northwestern part of the city — giving $34,544.81. Bargersville residents, specifically the 46106 zip code, gave $20,403.19 while Franklin residents in the 46131 zip code gave $13,668.85, filings show.

Only one zip code reported giving more to Harris than to Trump: 46124, which covers Edinburgh and the surrounding area in Johnson, Bartholomew and Shelby counties. Filings show $9,900 was given to Harris by Edinburgh residents, compared to $2,027.76 to Trump.

The zip code that has raised the most for Harris, however, is the 46143 zip code in Greenwood. Nearly $16,578 has been raised by residents in this zip code, according to filings.

Following 46143 and 46124 is another Greenwood zip code, 46142, and Franklin’s 46131. Residents in the 46142 zip code raised about $4,991 for Harris, while 46131 residents raised $4,398, filings show.

Only one zip code reported no contributions to Harris or Trump this year: 46142, which covers the Needham area and a part of western Shelby County.

It is unclear if local contributions to Harris’ campaign will continue at the same pace during the final stretch of the race. Additionally, it is impossible to say whether the surge in local contributions will translate into more Democratic votes in November.

Johnson County has historically voted for the Republican presidential candidate, with voters selecting Republicans for president every consecutive year since 1952. The last time a Democratic presidential candidate won the county was in 1948: President Harry S. Truman with 49.9% of the vote.

Election Day is Nov. 5.
