Docs: Argument over ribs escalates to shooting with two injuries in Greenwood

Charges were filed Thursday for a Greenwood man who allegedly shot his relative during a party last week.

Marcus D. Mundy, 36, was officially charged with attempted murder, a Level 1 Felony.

Mundy reportedly injured two people in a shooting in the 2000 block of Prairie Sky Lane just before 10:30 p.m. Aug. 23. The incident occurred at a send-off party for a family member who was shipping out to serve in the U.S. Navy.

An argument broke out between Mundy and his brother, Montae Mitchell, over who was going to eat the last of the ribs Mundy had cooked, according to a probable cause affidavit filed with Johnson County Superior Court 2.

Mundy and Mitchell got into a verbal altercation that turned physical. They exchanged blows and were pulled apart by other party-goers. They continued to get into physical altercations for about 20 minutes until they were separated by two female relatives who physically got in between them, the affidavit says.

Mundy then went upstairs to his bedroom alone. A few minutes later a female relative went upstairs to get her purse and heard a gun being loaded. She had planned to leave and take Mitchell away from the situation, the affidavit says.

However, as she got to the top of the stairs, Mundy came out of his bedroom and fired a “military-type assault rifle” at Mitchell, who was at the bottom of the stairs. She told police the gun must have been fired over her head, the affidavit says.

Deann Mitchell, the mother of both Mundy and Mitchell, was holding Mitchell back from going upstairs at the time he was shot; the bullet that shot him, also hit her upon exiting his body, the affidavit says.

The gunshot entered the man’s right shoulder and exited through his lower back, grazing two vital organs on the way through. The bullet hit the woman’s forearm. Both of those injured were in stable condition and did not require surgery, the affidavit says.

Mundy was taken into custody without incident that same night as the shooting, police said last week.

Several guests, including Mitchell, described the fighting leading up to the shooting as “play fighting” and they didn’t think it was a serious matter. However, others reportedly thought Mundy seemed angry and heard him say “I’m getting a gun” before he went upstairs, the affidavit says.

Each guest police spoke to said they only heard one gunshot. Witnesses say alcohol was being served at the party, but they don’t think Mundy was drunk, as he was in charge of the grill, the affidavit says.

A warrant was issued for a search of the home and law enforcement recovered three firearms, one being an assault-style rifle with 7.62x39mm rounds in the magazine, and one spent casing of the same type, the affidavit says.

Investigators found a bullet hole in the wall approximately 3 to 5 inches above the floor. Directly in front of the bullet hole, was damage to the floor as if the bullet ricocheted off of the floor and entered the wall. Recovery of the bullet was attempted but unsuccessful, the affidavit says.

A hearing for the the case was not set as of press time.
