Greenwood Christian is beginning to enjoy its new “home” field.

Playing at Beech Grove Middle School for a third consecutive week, the Cougars pulled away for a 49-14 victory over Wes-Del on Friday night.

Quarterback Trey Dobson got GCA (2-1) off to a quick start, scoring on the first drive of the game after running back Evan McIntire had a 29-yard rush to put the Cougars in scoring position. After a few unfruitful runs, Dobson eventually connected with Daniel Honeycutt in the end zone from 5 yards out with 6:57 left in the first quarter.

The Cougars defense then forced a turnover on downs, and another long rush set up Honeycutt for his second touchdown of the game, this time via an 8-yard jet sweep with 2:35 left in the first.

The visiting Warriors (0-3) came back and ran the ball 15 times before Rhyker Mauck eventually punched it in on a 4-yard rush to get the Warriors on the scoreboard.

On the very next play, the Warriors’ Malachi DuBois intercepted Dobson on an underthrown pass to put Wes Del at the 37-yard line. Five plays later, Eli Wright took a 5-yard rush to the end zone, and Wes-Del converted a two-point try to even the score at 14-14.

“Wes-Del are coached very well and are very disciplined with what they do, running that ground and pound,” GCA coach Andre Dobson said. “It gave us some fits in the first half; thankfully we were able to make some adjustments at halftime and the rest was us.”

The next touchdown the Cougars scored was set up by some fancy footwork from Trey Dobson to convert a fourth down. He rushed the ball 23 yards to the end zone on the next play to put GCA up 21-14 with 15.8 seconds left in the half.

The Cougars kept their momentum going into the third quarter. Dobson and Honeycutt again showed their chemistry on the field, hooking up for a 53-yard touchdown pass to put GCA up two scores.

“That’s just guys who love hanging out and competing,” coach Dobson said. “They truly want the best for their teammates and friends. These guys are special kids and playmakers.”

The rest of the second half was much of the same. Trey Dobson threw a touchdown pass to Zach Haynes and then ran for another after a Wes-Del turnover.

“Pretty much about half of what Trey does is not in our game plan,” Andre Dobson chuckled. “He does some crazy stuff. Hopefully he’s fun to watch. I would like some plays to be run certain ways, but he gets stuff done.”

GCA will be back at BGMS for its homecoming game against Edinburgh, concluding a four-game home stand to begin the season.
