Cross country

Grizzly Cub boys win at Brown County

Liam Fennig was second and Isiah Tunis third to lead the Franklin boys to first place in the Varsity AA division at Brown County’s Eagle Classic on Saturday morning. Brooks Huddleston was 10th and Alex Lin 19th for the Grizzly Cubs, who edged Terre Haute South 59-65 for the win.

Center Grove’s boys were eighth in the Elite division; Jayden Salo was 36th individually to lead the Trojans. The Center Grove girls were 16th, paced by Hallie Mimbela in 37th. Franklin’s girls were seventh in the Varsity AA team standings behind top-20 finishes from Hannah Lindsay (11th) and Ava Ott (14th).

Franklin claims victory at Smock

Led by a 76 from medalist Addi Bright and a 77 from Reese Phillips, sixth-ranked Franklin totaled a 325 to finish atop the field at the Franklin Central Invite on Saturday. Lexi Ray finished at 80 and Cassidy Rucker at 92 for the Grizzly Cubs.

Trojans tie for third

No. 8 Center Grove shot 319 as a team to tie for third at the Bloomington North Invitational. Zoe Land shot 77 and Magnolia Miller 78 for the Trojans, while London Dodson and Amanda Wallace each carded an 82.

Lancers’ Blandford is MHC medalist

Edinburgh’s Macie Blandford fired an 86 to finish 16 shots ahead of the field at the Mid-Hoosier Conference tournament at North Branch. The Lancers did not have enough golfers to post a team score.

Boys tennis

Warriors win two of three

No. 18 Whiteland swept Southport and edged Terre Haute South 3-2 but suffered a 3-2 loss to Terre Haute North in tourney play on Saturday. Spencer Gillespie was a perfect 3-0 at first singles for the Warriors (11-4), with Gavin Stubbe and Isaac Phegley also winning all three of their matches at No. 1 doubles.

Host Woodmen finish second

Greenwood earned 3-2 victories over Jennings County and Warren Central but fell to Roncalli by that same score. Keegan Lane paced the Woodmen (9-7) with three victories at No. 2 singles on the day while Seth McCauley got three points at second doubles, two with Isaac Apgar and one with Beau Syers.

Men’s harriers claim title

John Asplund’s second-place individual finish lifted Franklin College to first place at the Hanover Invitational on Saturday, the Grizzlies’ first team championship under coach Brandon Dworak. William Hirsch was seventh overall, followed by Riley Devening (ninth), Trevor Newby (10th) and Zachary Schroeder (12th). The Franklin women finished fourth, led by Haley Makowski in eighth and Ella Bashor in 10th.

Women’s tennis gets first win

Franklin College was a 5-2 winner over Concordia Ann Arbor on Saturday. Ailyn Hendricks, Brenna Atchison and Mattie Foster all won at both doubles and singles for the Grizzlies.

Football drops road contest

For the second straight week, Franklin College struggled to get its offense going in a 48-6 loss at Hope College on Saturday. Owen Wright scored the lone touchdown for the Grizzlies (0-2) on an 18-yard pass from Marshall Kmiecik, who was making his first career start at quarterback. Wright had four catches for 70 yards in defeat, while DeMarion Newell paced the defense with seven tackles.

Volleyball wins one of three

Franklin College went 1-2 in tournament play at Manchester, beating St. Mary’s before falling to Alma in three sets and the host Spartans in five. Kaitlyn Lavy had 34 kills on the day to lead the Grizzlies (4-8), with Brionna Linkel totaling 81 assists.
