GCA football drops shootout at Milan

It won’t show up on Greenwood Christian’s won-loss record, but coach Andre Dobson realizes progress is its own victory.

The Cougars’ 64-48 loss at Milan on Friday night revealed what GCA, in just its second season playing a full varsity schedule, needs to do be able to stand toe-to-toe with a six-time sectional champion that began fielding teams in 1983.

Junior quarterback Trey Dobson led the Cougars (3-2), completing 17 of 29 pass attempts for 313 yards and three touchdowns. Dodson also rushed for 78 yards and a pair of scores on 18 carries. Greenwood Christian junior Isaiah Johnson Jr. finished with 148 receiving yards and two touchdowns.

Milan (3-2) piled up 477 yards of total offense to the Cougars’ 413.

Coach Dobson, whose 2023 squad dropped a 49-6 decision to Milan at home, couldn’t help but be encouraged by his team’s latest outing.

“I have a team that’s full of heart. Never gave up. Never put their heads down,” he said. “(Milan) thought they were going to handle us tonight, but they learned something about GCA football. These kids just do what I ask them to do. They’re warriors, and I’m beyond proud. But hats off to Milan. They’re a very well-coached team, and they get after it.”

Milan outscored GCA, 29-20, in a second quarter offensive free-for-all to take a 42-28 halftime lead.

Leading the Greenwood Christian defense was Daniel Honeycutt with six tackles; Eli Jackson and Evan McIntire added five apiece.

The Cougars take to the road again in Week 6, traveling to North Central (Farmersburg).
