GREENWOOD
Steven “Steve” D. Wright, 83, of Greenwood, passed away on September 18, 2024. His loving wife of 38 years, also of Greenwood, Sondra “Soni” (Franklin) Wright, passed away on October 1, 2024. Steve was born on July 8, 1941, in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Ben and Evelyn (Scott) Wright. Soni was born November 9, 1953, in Indianapolis, Indiana to the late Wilbur and Jackie (Gerking) Franklin.
Steve and Soni were active members of Southland Christian Church for over 10 years. They belonged to the Life Builders Sunday School class. Last year they took a trip-of-a-lifetime with their church to the Holy Land of Isreal and had an incredible time. They couldn’t wait to share all the amazing things they saw and experienced with their family and friends.
Steve faithfully served on the building and maintenance team; cleaning the parking lot every weekend month after month; he also helped with landscaping and general maintenance around the property. He attended Bible Study Fellowship where he served as a greeter; Steve also led a small group Bible study for years.
Soni attended the Wednesday morning Ladies Bible study; she volunteered for years in the church office and was very involved in women’s ministry. For many years she hosted a Christmas table for the women’s ministry annual dinner.
Steve enjoyed sports, puzzles, animals (cats &dogs) and spending time with friends &family. Much of his career was spent as a chemist at Eli Lilly. In his early retirement, he provided consultant expertise in the pharmaceutical industry, and he spent a few years teaching at Trader’s Point Christian School.
Soni enjoyed gardening, cooking, games, scrapbooking, animals (cats &dogs) and spending time with friends &family. Her career was also spent at Eli Lilly where she held a wide variety of positions in Global Manufacturing Operations, Employment Services, Compensation and finally, the Global Relocation Team.
They are survived by children, Rene Atkins, Jason (Amy) Wright; grandchildren, Ashleigh (Stephen) Bailey, Amy Sizemore, Steven Sizemore, Luke Spilman, Emma (Grant) Langley, Madi Wright and great-grandchildren; Claire, Mason, Emery and Oliver; nephews, Tyler (Elizabeth) Franklin, Levi Parr, Boston Parr, and Jennie (Tom) Jodziewicz; Soni’s sister; Angie Franklin and Steve’s brothers, Danny (Mary) Wright, Roger (Judy) Wright; and several other nieces and nephews.
Steve and Soni were preceded in death by his daughter, Amy Y. Wright; her brother, Steven J. Franklin, and nephew, Michael “Heath” Wright.
The family would like to thank the staff at Community Hospital South ICU for the excellent care and compassion provided to Steve and a special thank you to the staff at St. Francis Hospice House for the outstanding care and compassion provided to Soni. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to the American Diabetes Association.
A joint visitation will be held from 4 pm to 8 pm, Thursday, October 3, at G. H. Herrmann Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 1605 S. State Road 135, Greenwood, IN.
A joint funeral service will be conducted at 10 am, Friday, October 4, at the funeral home.
They will be laid to rest together at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
