Girls volleyball

Grizzly Cubs cruise to crown

Franklin finished off a dominating run through the Class 4A East Central Sectional with a 25-15, 25-8, 25-23 victory over the host Trojans in Saturday’s championship match. The Grizzly Cubs (27-3) earned their spot in the final with a 25-15, 25-13, 25-21 semifinal win over Whiteland. Rose Mahin had 20 kills against the Warriors, including the 1,000th of her career.

Cougars drop title match in five

Greenwood Christian pushed host Indianapolis Lutheran to the brink during their Class A sectional championship match on Saturday, but the Saints rallied from two sets down for a 22-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 19-17 triumph. The Cougars (19-14) reached the final by virtue of a 25-9, 25-2, 25-3 sweep of Victory College Prep in their morning semifinal.

Braves lose semifinal in four

Indian Creek’s season reached its end with a 25-16, 25-15, 22-25, 25-17 loss to Class 3A No. 8 New Palestine in a sectional semifinal at Roncalli. The Braves finish the year with an 18-5 record.

The host Royals (31-0), ranked first in the state, won the title with a 25-9, 25-15, 25-11 sweep of the Dragons.

Franklin College

Football dominates Manchester

Garrett Cora scored four touchdowns and the Franklin College defense limited Manchester to 100 total yards in a convincing 49-0 win at Manchester on Saturday afternoon.

Cora scored on runs of 17 and 2 yards in the first quarter and caught a 9-yard TD pass from Kai Ross in the second, staking the Grizzlies (2-4, 1-1 HCAC) to a 21-0 lead. Michael Loper added a fumble return for a score before halftime.

In the third quarter, Cora scored from 20 yards out and Kam Jennings added a 27-yard scoring run; Zane Downing’s 22-yard touchdown run in the fourth capped the scoring.

Owen Wright caught nine passes for 136 yards in the win.

Swimming and diving fares well

Franklin College placed second among women’s teams and fourth among men in the Indiana DIII Invite at Rose-Hulman. The Grizzly women got individual victories from Celeste Hollis (100 IM, 100 butterfly), Petal Sloan (200 freestyle), Avery Tomlinson 200 breaststroke), Kamryn Elder (1-meter diving) and Kaleigh Schuler (3-meter diving). Zachary Jackson-Blaine was the lone men’s winner, taking the 50 freestyle.

Volleyball swept by Pioneers

Franklin College dropped a three-set home match to Transylvania on Saturday. Kaitlyn Lavy had nine kills and Hope Moring eight for the Grizzlies (9-14, 0-3 HCAC).

Women’s soccer falls to Lions

Franklin College suffered a 3-0 defeat at Mount St. Joseph, falling to 4-7-2 overall and 3-3 in league play.
