Local organizations to take part in Drug Take Back Day

At least three local organizations are taking part in a Drug Take Back Day this weekend.

The Drug Enforcement Administration, or DEA, will hold National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday. The day is designed to offer people the chance to safely and securely drop off expired medications or prescriptions no longer needed.

Community Health Network is taking part in Drug Take Back Day at five of their health care facilities, where Community Health staff will be on-site to collect the medications for proper disposal. This includes Community Hospital South, 1402 E. County Line Road, Indianapolis, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, according to a news release.

Acceptable items include:

  • Prescriptions
  • Over the counter pills
  • Liquid medication
  • Pet medication

Meijer stores are also taking part in the event. This includes stores in Franklin, 2390 N. Morton St., and Greenwood, 150 S. Marlin Dr.

Items not accepted as part of the program include needles or other sharps, inhalers, mercury thermometers, medications that contain iodine, and illicit drugs, according to a Meijer news release.

The Indiana State Police is also taking part, with nearly all of the agency’s posts accepting for liquid and pill medications for free and anonymously. Vaping pens without batteries and vaping cartridges will also be taken, but needles, new or used, will not be accepted for disposal, officials said in a news release.
