Downtown Indy I-65 section reopening ahead of schedule

An interstate closure in the heart of Indianapolis is finished nearly a week ahead of schedule.

Interstate 65 southbound between West Street and Alabama Street in downtown Indianapolis began reopening Friday. The section had been closed since Oct. 15 for bridge deck patching and joint repairs. It was expected to be closed for up to 16 days, but is now reopening about five-to-six days earlier, the Indiana Department of Transportation announced Friday.

The West St. entrance ramp was expected to reopen by 3 p.m. Friday, followed by southbound lanes of I-65. Lane closures were scheduled to begin at 9 p.m. Friday to begin reopening I-65 southbound to through traffic, according to INDOT.

All lanes and ramps are anticipated to open by 4 a.m. Saturday. This includes the other ramps affected by the closure:

  • 38th Street eastbound to I-65 southbound,
  • Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Street southbound to I-65 southbound,
  • 29th Street eastbound and 30th Street westbound to I-65 southbound,
  • 21st Street eastbound and westbound to I-65 southbound,
  • I-65 southbound to Meridian Street,
  • I-65 southbound to Michigan Street, Ohio Street, and Fletcher Avenue,
  • I-65 southbound to I-70 eastbound and westbound.

Motorists should drive carefully and watch for changing traffic patterns during the reopening process. INDOT reminds drivers to visit 511in.org or download the INDOT TrafficWise app to map their route.
