Johnson County Sheriff’s Office helps resolve police stand off in Brown County

Johnson County Sheriff’s Office helped bring a police stand-off in Brown County to a peaceful end Thursday evening.

On Thursday at approximately 4:50 p.m., the Brown County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 1800 block of Mt. Liberty Road in Nashville for a trespass complaint. Deputies responded and soon after attempted to make contact with the alleged suspect at a neighboring residence in the 1900 block of Mt. Liberty Road, according to a press release from BCSO.

As deputies were approaching the residence, the suspect, identified as Daniel Stockdale of Nashville, pointed a long gun at deputies through an exterior window. As deputies took cover, a single gunshot was fired by Stockdale in an unknown direction, according to BCSO.

After a nearly six-hour standoff with law enforcement, Stockdale was taken into custody without further incident. Stockdale was transported to Columbus Regional Health for medical clearance and later transported to the Brown County Sheriff’s Office where he remanded to the Brown County Jail, according to BCSO.

Johnson County SWAT deputies provided mutual aid to help serve a search warrant at the home, said Duane Burgess, Johnson County Sheriff. The incident took so long to resolve because SWAT deputies made every attempt to resolve the situation before entering the residence.

“You’re giving that individual commands so he gets out of the house and gets help, but he was just not responding to any commands that we were giving,” Burgess said. “We wanted to get the situation taken care of safely. Because there are neighbors who have been affected by this individual’s actions.”

Brown County deputies had reportedly been at the residence multiple times this week for issues with Stockton that seem to be related to a mental health issue, according to incident reports reviewed by Brown County Democrat.
