Greenwood Police warns of officer impersonation scam

Greenwood Police is warning of a scam involving people impersonating officers.

Scammers are attempting to defraud citizens by falsely claiming they have missed a court date and that there is now a warrant out for their arrest for failure to appear in court. These criminals are impersonating law enforcement officials, including using the names of actual Greenwood Police Department officers, in an attempt to scare citizens into paying fines or providing personal information, the agency said in a Facebook post Wednesday.

Greenwood Police will never contact individuals by phone to demand payment or threaten arrest for failing to show up for court, the post says. Only scammers will call, text, or email demanding payment via cash, gift card, cryptocurrency, wire transfer service or payment apps, such as Cash App, Zelle and Venmo.

If a citizen receives a call or communication like this, they are urged to:

  • Not provide any personal information or payment.
  • Hang up immediately.
  • Contact the Greenwood Police Department to verify the legitimacy of the call.
  • Report the incident to local law enforcement if you believe you have fallen victim to this scam.
  • Block the number.
