Local sports roundup: Trojan girls claim season-opener

Katie Schier’s goal held up as the day’s only offense, and the Center Grove girls soccer team opened its season with a 1-0 home victory against Perry Meridian on Wednesday.

Ella Thompson earned the shutout in goal for the Trojans, who return to action Monday against Lawrence Central.

<strong>Rebels overwhelm Warren Central</strong>

Kelley Grube, Josie Asher, Courtney Reece and Morgan Kincaid all found the back of the net as Roncalli posted a 7-0 shutout victory against Warren Central on Wednesday.

Grube and Asher each tallied a pair of goals for the Rebels.

<strong>Whiteland falls at Triton Central</strong>

Playing at Triton Central on Wednesday afternoon, Whiteland was swept by the Tigers in three games, 25-9, 25-18, 25-15.

<strong>Trojans drop opener at Avon</strong>

In a battle of ranked teams, Class 4A No. 3 Avon rallied Tuesday for a 23-25, 28-26, 28-26, 25-16 victory against visiting Center Grove.

The Trojans, ranked seventh in Class 4A, received 22 kills from 5-foot-10 junior outside hitter Ellen LeMasters in their season-opener. Emma Jones, a 6-1 junior middle blocker, added 12 kills to go along with freshman defensive specialist Ashley Eck’s 15 digs.

Senior setter Macy Carrabine contributed 34 assists in a losing cause for Center Grove (0-1), which plays at Martinsville tonight.
<h4><strong>Boys tennis</strong></h4>
<strong>Rebels sweep Scecina</strong>

Dropping just one game across five matches, Roncalli made quick work of Indianapolis Scecina on Wednesday in a shutout victory.

Jake Evans, Chad Ransburg and Bryson Meek all won their respective singles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Max Huebler and Adam Mattingly were winners at No. 1 doubles, while Ryan Heckman and Alex Payne were triumphant in the second doubles slot.

<strong>Warriors earn first victory</strong>

Whiteland picked up its first win of the young season Wednesday, topping Ben Davis by a 4-1 score to even its record at 1-1.

Caleb Scott and Adam Zietlow were winners at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively, and the Warriors swept the doubles points. Grant Cloud and Garrison Pelfree were 6-0, 6-0 winners at No. 1, and Whiteland claimed the No. 2 doubles point by default.

<strong>Franklin wins first two matches</strong>

Singles victories from Noah Roberts and Jonah Rockey helped propel Franklin past Shelbyville on Wednesday, 4-1, for the team’s second win in as many days.

The doubles tandems of Jake Rockey and Logan Snyder at No. 1 and Josiah Rockey and Ethan Klem at No. 2 swept their matches in straight sets.

On Tuesday, the Grizzly Cubs cruised to a 5-0 victory against Southport. Andy Bennett joined all of Wednesday’s winners in the victory column.
<h4><strong>Girls golf</strong></h4>
<strong>Woodmen beaten by Olympians</strong>

Despite a 45 from Julianna Lamey, the Greenwood girls fell to Columbus East at Otter Creek on Wednesday, 189 to 209.

Maecee Terhune and Maeci West each carded a 54 in defeat for the Woodmen, who host Columbus North today at Hickory Stick.

<strong>Trojans fall at Fishers</strong>

Despite a 38 from Shelby Schier, Center Grove was unable to knock off Fishers at Grey Eagle Golf Course, ending up on the wrong end of a 154-169 score.

Hannah Wilson added a 43 for the Trojans, while Lucy Young and Ashley Voyles each finished with a 44.

<strong>Whiteland finishes third</strong>

Though Bri Harwell shot a 44, Whiteland came up on the bottom end of a three-way match Wednesday.

The Warriors totaled 194, well back of Plainfield (160) and five shots behind Mooresville (189).

Rachel Giroud carded a 47 for Whiteland, which also got a 49 from Audrey Eckart.

<strong>Grizzly Cubs win three-way match</strong>

Alexa Wilkison led a balanced lineup with a 47 as the Franklin girls golf team defeated Avon and Greenwood at Prestwick Country Club on Tuesday.

Taylor Drake added a 48 for the Grizzly Cubs, who posted a team score of 195 to defeat Avon by 16 strokes and Greenwood by 23. Avery Auton and Kristina Young each carded a 50 in the victory.

The Woodmen were again paced by Julianna Lamey, who earned medalist honors on the day with a 46.
