Man accused of impersonating public servant

A man was arrested after falsely telling an Edinburgh couple that he was a U.S. Marshal and was looking for their son, police said.

Howard W. Begley, 65, 5800 Hicks Road, Nineveh, was arrested on a charge of impersonating a public servant.

An Edinburgh resident told police Begley came to his home on Friday, identified himself as a U.S. Marshal and said he was looking for the couple’s son, who wasn’t home. Begley said the son had harassed his daughter, and he would be arrested, along with anyone who tried to interfere, according to the Edinburgh Police Department report.

The resident knew Begley from a previous incident, and never knew him to be involved with any law enforcement agency. His wife was concerned for their safety and wanted to make a report to police, the report said.

The Edinburgh police officer called Begley. Begley then left him multiple voicemails, saying he was just doing the police officer’s job, and also said the officer would be arrested, the report said.

Police tracked down Begley at a Brown County home, and he told officers he did go to the couple’s home and lied about being a U.S. Marshal to get information, the report said.

Begley was arrested and taken to the Johnson County jail, where he was released on $1,000 bond.
