Two injured in bus accident

Two people were injured after a bus went off State Road 44, east of Franklin.

The accident happened at 5:22 p.m. Tuesday near the intersection with County Road 600E.

The charter bus driver, Celestine Bowers Martin, 50, of Indianapolis, told police a vehicle in front of the bus slowed and began to turn before pulling back onto State Road 44. Martin swerved to miss the other vehicle and went off the road, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

The driver of the other vehicle told police the bus did not appear to be slowing down and he swerved to avoid being struck, the report said.

After going off the road, the bus struck a telephone pole guide wire, and emergency officials had to wait for Johnson County REMC to cut power before being able to get to the bus, Sheriff Doug Cox said.

The bus had 56 passengers and was heading to Shelby County. Access Johnson County vehicles were called to take the passengers to Shelby County, Cox said.

Martin reported leg and foot pain and another passenger, Russell Schofer, 83, of Shelbyville, reported hip or leg pain. Both were taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital, according to the report.
