Franklin offering music camp for students

Local students who love singing, dancing and music can enroll in a music camp hosted by Franklin Community High School.

Franklin Community High School’s choral and vocal music camp will be June 11 to 15 at the high school, 2600 Cumberland Road, Franklin.

Michael Hummel, choir director, tells you what you need to know about the camp.

What can students expect to learn?

Students will be exposed to various styles of music from traditional choral to pop. They will also learn basic show choir choreography. Students will participate in a festival choir which will give them the opportunity to perform with a large group grades 5-12 which is very unique. Students will also be part of smaller ensembles where they will receive more individual attention as they perform like voice songs.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]

For those in leadership roles, there are also leadership training sessions and opportunities. Students may elect to take private voice lessons at a discounted camp rate each day. Last year over 40 students received private voice instruction each day at camp.

The camp concludes with a Camp Festival Luncheon concert. The concert includes the 8 to 10 songs campers have learned in only one week. In addition many of the students receiving private voice instruction during the week are selected to perform their solo pieces.

The camp is very unique in that it encompasses so many grades and includes diverse performing ensembles and choreography. Another hallmark is that it includes students from many different school districts. The instructors also come from across Indiana to teach as well.

Who can attend?

Any student going into grade 5 and graduating this year may attend. Students may come from any school district and home school students are also welcome.

How many people can enroll?

The camp can take as many as enroll. Last year the camp had 117 students and we are hoping for 150 this year. It started with only 28 five summers ago.

How much is the camp?

$90 per student. Discounts are offered for multiple student enrollments from one family.
