Incumbent keeps party’s nomination in auditor race

Incumbent Pamela Burton defended a challenge to earn the Republican nomination for Johnson County auditor.

Burton, who is in her first term as auditor, received 61 percent of the votes compared to Ryan Rather, the deputy director of Johnson County 911, who got 39 percent of the votes.

Burton said she wanted to thank voters, friends and family for their support.

"I will continue serving the taxpayers of Johnson County," she said. "My 26 years of experience is what came out on top. Taxpayers have been happy with my service."

No candidates filed to run for auditor in the Democratic primary. The party has until June 30 to select a candidate.

The auditor is responsible for overseeing the collection and distribution of county taxes and estimating how much tax revenue the county expects to receive each year. Another key issue the office handles is property tax deductions that limit how much homeowners pay in their taxes.

A fellow county employee filed a discrimination report in the weeks leading up to the election, but Burton said she is focused on her job and putting those accusations behind her.

Burton is facing allegations of discrimination after a county employee said she made inappropriate sexist comments in the workplace, implying she would not be able to keep her shirt on or would expose her breasts in a photo.

Lori Prince, a deputy prosecutor for the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office, called for Burton’s resignation and filed an initial inquiry with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, claiming she was discriminated against.

Burton is in her first term as auditor, but has been a county employee for 26 years.

"I’m focused on my job and putting that stuff behind me," Burton said. "That was mud slinging and didn’t prevail and for that I am grateful."
[sc:pullout-title pullout-title="Johnson County Auditor" ][sc:pullout-text-begin]
Johnson County Auditor
