Sheriff: Greenwood woman scammed

<p>A Greenwood woman was scammed out of more than $1,000 by a man claiming to work for local law enforcement.</p><p>The woman said she received a call just after 3 p.m. on Wednesday at work from a man who said his name was “Captain Rollins” and claimed there was a warrant out for her arrest for failure to appear at jury duty, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.</p><p>The man told her the call was being recorded and that, if she didn’t want to be arrested, she was to purchase $1,000 in Apple Store gift cards and then go to the sheriff’s office to prove her identity.</p><p>The woman purchased $1,000 in gift cards, but was told by the caller that $500 didn’t transfer and she would need to make another $500 purchase. She spent 2 hours on the phone with the man while the transactions were made and confirmed, the report said.</p><p>The woman then drove to the sheriff’s office, where deputies informed her that no one by the name “Captain Rollins” works for the department and she was the victim of a scam.</p>
