Caucus set after Whiteland Town Council member resigns

A Whiteland Town Council member has resigned, and the Johnson County Republican Party will hold a caucus later this month to select his replacement.

Town council member Scot Ford resigned last week. He cited fatigue as the reason for his retirement.

“I’m 68 years old, and I’m tired,” Ford said. “I just think younger folks with different ideas can progress (Whiteland) even more.”

Ford has also resigned from his position on the Whiteland Redevelopment Commission. He has served the town since 1983 when he started on the Whiteland Plan Commission. He has been a town council member since 2015.

Since Ford served as a Republican, only registered Republicans who have a Whiteland address are eligible to run. Those interested should send a letter of interest and an executed and notarized copy of the CEB-5 form to Beth Boyce, chairperson of the county GOP, at 845 Richart Lane, Greenwood, IN, 46142 by 7 p.m. June 19.

Candidates must be able to serve until Dec. 31, 2023, the end of Ford’s term.

The caucus is set for 7 p.m. June 22. Eight precinct committeemen will select Ford’s replacement from the candidates who have filed.

Town council members are tasked with voting on issues that affect the Town of Whiteland, including the budget, development proposals, tax abatements and town managers.

Ford is proud of his time on the council, most of which was served under former town manager Norm Gabehart, he said.

“We did a tremendous amount of progression in commercial development,” Ford said. “We were able to pave about 90% of our streets and pay down the debt from about $6 million to $1.6 million, give or take.”
