Man arrested on charge of stealing vehicle

Police arrested a Greenwood man on a warrant for auto theft.

Christian Shane Rowe, 18, 5313 Brenda Blvd., was arrested this week.

Greenwood police said Rowe stole the car on Nov. 29, but was not in it when they found it parked in a driveway in the 1200 block of Breaside Court, according to a police report.

Police were called to the neighborhood near Smith Valley and Yorktown roads at 5:41 p.m. on reports of a woman and man, later identified as Rowe, jumping fences between houses. Several residents captured it on surveillance videos that were turned over to police, the report said.

In one of the videos, Rowe and the woman are seen jumping over a privacy fence into a backyard and walking toward a house, acting suspicious. One resident confronted Rowe in his neighbor’s backyard, but Rowe took off, jumping several more fences before disappearing, the man told police. Rowe left his shoes behind, which the man gave to police as evidence.

When police arrived, they noticed the car, a Toyota Prius, parked in a driveway in the neighborhood, according to the report. An officer recognized it from an incident that occurred earlier that day in which police were trying to arrest a man on unrelated charges.

The car was at the scene of that crime, and officers said Rowe was in the driver’s seat. Police questioned Rowe and the woman he was with, but they left in the car while police were chasing the other suspect, police said.

Later that same day, Rowe was located and questioned, but was released after he told officers he knew nothing about the car or the shoes, the report said.

When police saw the vehicle in the neighborhood they contacted the owner, who told them that Rowe had stolen her car earlier that day.

She had told Rowe to bring her car back or she would call police. He said he would, but never did, according to the report. She did not report the theft to police.

Rowe is being held at the Johnson County jail on $1,200 bond.
