Four local communities get state grant to pay for road projects

Dozens of roads in neighborhoods and heavily trafficked areas throughout Johnson County will be repaved, repaired or rebuilt with money from the state.

Bargersville, Edinburgh, Greenwood and Prince’s Lakes were each awarded Community Crossings Grants from the Indiana Department of Transportation to make improvements to roads in those communities.

In total, Johnson County received just shy of $2.7 million, with one of the county’s smaller towns getting the biggest chunk. Bargersville received just under $1 million, Greenwood received $874,130, Edinburgh received $639,075 and Prince’s Lakes received $166,816.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

The Community Crossings Matching Grant Program launched in 2016, allowing cities, towns and counties to apply for grants that will enable them to make improvements to their roads and bridges. The state awarded more than $115 million in the last grant cycle to cities and towns around the state.

Smaller communities with fewer than 10,000 people, such as Edinburgh, Prince’s Lakes and Bargersville, are required to put in 25 percent of a project’s cost with the state’s 75 percent grant, while larger cities, such as Greenwood, are required to match the state’s grant.

Work for most of the projects will occur in the 2020 construction season.

Bargersville is using the money on 10 road projects, with a few addressing roads that intersect near State Road 135. Others, including work on county roads and Saddle Club Road, are where the town’s planners and developers have planned new roads or are expanding existing subdivisions roads.

Other roads with planned work include Old Plank Road, two separate portions of Harriman Avenue and Westview Place and Drive.

Road projects were chosen based on the level of work that is needed, said Julie Young, Bargersville’s town manager.

Neighborhood roads in Greenwood will get facelifts, as Greenwood is using all of their grant money to spruce up the roads in four of its subdivisions.

Multiple streets in the Stoneybrook Springs subdivision will be addressed, including Stoneybrook Drive, Stoneybrook Court, Lake Point Lane, Lake Point Circle and Lakeridge Lane. Most of the work will be mill and overlay and is a continuation of the city’s already planned work, said Daniel Johnston, Greenwood’s city engineer.

Roads in the Meridian Meadows subdivision will mostly be replacing concrete pavement with new asphalt pavement, as well as curb replacement. Streets affected in that subdivision include Meridian Meadows Court, Cambridge Court, and Kirkwood Court, Johnston said.

Mill and overlay will also be done on streets in Grassy Creek Commons and Timber Creek Village. Those streets include Bridgecreek Crossing, Bridgebend Run, Roundhouse Circle, Creekside Lane and Kara Lane.

A portion of County Road 900 North will be reconstructed in Edinburgh. That road sees a lot of increased traffic, much of it for industrial purposes and needs attention, said JT Doane, Edinburgh’s town manager.

Also, there has been a 24 percent increase in traffic on U.S. 31 that could affect that road in the future, Doane said.

The portion that is getting reconstructed is 3,380 feet from U.S. 31 to the rail road tracks, Doane said.

Prince’s Lakes is using the money for paving projects on six roads in the its community, said Karen Harrison, the town’s clerk-treasurer.

Those roads include Howard Prince Drive, Kay Lane, Adler Drive, Stopek Drive, Kinman Drive and Lakeview Drive.
[sc:pullout-title pullout-title="At a glance" ][sc:pullout-text-begin]
Here is a look at the road projects that will be completed using Community Crossings Grant money:
