Clark-Pleasant reports first student with COVID-19

<p>A Whiteland Community High School student tested positive for COVID-19 Tuesday, marking the district’s first known case among the student body since reopening its buildings last week.</p><p>Before school started, three staff members tested positive for the virus, and were already in quarantine when classes began Aug. 6, school officials said.</p><p>The student attended school the first two days, on Aug. 6 and Friday, and became symptomatic Friday night, testing positive on Tuesday. That student will remain home in isolation until Aug. 21, given the student has gone at least 24 hours without a fever, Superintendent Patrick Spray said in an email to parents and guardians.</p><p>The school notified everyone who was considered in close contact with the student, within six feet for at 15 minutes, although school officials wouldn’t say whether those individuals are also quarantined, and Clark-Pleasant schools’ reentry plans don’t make clear if all students and staff members in close contact will be asked to quarantine.</p><p>“Families of students who have been in close contact with the individual who tested positive for COVID-19 will be contacted by the school and asked to self-monitor and follow CDC guidelines,” the reentry plan says. “This may include a requirement to stay home from school for a period of time.”</p><p>About 1,900 students attend the high school, which employs 118 full-time educators.</p><p>Clark-Pleasant is the third Johnson County school district to report a student testing positive for COVID-19, and all student cases so far have been at the high-school level. Two Edinburgh Community High School students have tested positive for the virus since school started July 30, and a student at Greenwood Community High School tested positive Monday.</p>
