Greenwood boys soccer gets past GCA

Greenwood didn’t play like a two-win boys soccer team for most of its match Monday night.

Thanks to a 4-2 victory over Greenwood Christian, it isn’t one any longer.

Senior David Young and junior Josh Harris produced two goals apiece for the Woodmen, who improved to 3-9-1. The Cougars dropped to 7-8-1.

“We wanted to come out with a high press. We wanted to make their defenders nervous, make them make some mistakes and get some quick goals up top,” said Young, who scored his team-leading eighth and ninth goals of the season in the win.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery
“Winning tonight is big. It’s been a long time, and it’s nice to break that streak. This team is getting better every match. We’re starting to build some team chemistry. It’s a big confidence boost.”

Greenwood controlled much of the opening half, taking a 2-0 lead at break.

Harris scored 14 minutes and 42 seconds into the match, right-footing a shot into the goal from approximately 20 yards out. He took advantage of the GCA player defending him slipping briefly, which provided enough of a split-second window for the Woodmen to break a scoreless tie.

The home team’s next goal can be credited to Young’s hustle after he sped past a Cougars player to get possession of the ball to score with 7:17 remaining in the half.

Harris’ goal from virtually point-blank range 6:01 into the second half looked like it might have given the Woodmen an insurmountable 3-0 lead. But two Greenwood Christian goals in the span of 52 seconds swung the momentum in the Cougars’ favor, greatly changing the dynamic of the match.

A long pass resulted in a header by GCA freshman Charlie Overton 12:21 into the half, which got GCA on the board. Shortly thereafter, it was senior forward John Amador converting his 23rd goal of the season to make it a 3-2 contest.

The Cougars were never able to tie the score; Young ended the suspense on a breakaway by slipping a shot past diving Cougars goalkeeper Isaac Vessely with only 7:03 remaining.

Greenwood Christian has dominated the series of late, but not Monday.

“It’s huge. Somebody said it was 2011, but it’s my first time in four years,” Woodmen coach Dan Weber said. “I’m glad we were able to get over that hump. They gave us a run there in the second half, but we were able to keep our heads about us and get back in it.”

“The difference tonight was our one-touch passing. We held the ball too much mostly, but on the defensive end they have really come around this season. Since it’s working, they’re really believing in our formations and our game plan.”

Greenwood plays at Southwestern on Wednesday, while the Cougars host Indianapolis Lutheran on Thursday.
