A fire broke out in the attic of a house Wednesday near downtown Franklin.

The Franklin Fire Department arrived at the house in the 300 block of W King Street. The fire was confined to the attic, but not large enough to be visible from the outside of the house, said Matt Culp, fire chief.

Firefighters cut a hole in the roof and pulled in fire hoses. Inside, the fire destroyed about two-thirds of the room, Culp said.

All the residents inside got out before the fire department arrived. Crews extinguished the fire in about 15 minutes, and there appeared to be significant smoke damage, he said.

The cause of the fire was under investigation Wednesday afternoon.
