College notebook: Burris a hit for UIndy softball

<p>University of Indianapolis senior softball player <strong>Hanna Burris</strong> had two hits in a 2-0 decision over Cedarville. The Center Grove graduate added a single in a 6-3 victory in the second game of the doubleheader. The Greyhounds swept West Virginia State as Burris had a single, a home run and four RBIs in the first game and three singles and a steal in the second.</p><p><strong>Center Grove</strong></p><p>Franklin College pitcher <strong>Jackson Young</strong> worked the final three innings in a 12-7 loss to Manchester to open the baseball season. Young surrendered two hits, walked one and struck out two. In the second game, a 13-3 Grizzlies win, <strong>Chris Foote</strong> pitched the final inning, allowing a hit and striking out a batter. Young delivered three hits and drove in four in a 14-1 victory over Defiance.</p><p>Senior <strong>Tye Thixton</strong> helped Indiana Wesleyan sweep four games from St. Francis by delivering a total of eight hits, scoring seven runs and stealing two bases.</p><p>Morehead State pitcher <strong>Grant Herron</strong> picked up the save in a 13-10 decision over Marshall. Herron pitched the final 1 1/3 innings, giving up three hits and striking out three. He also recorded a save in a 12-9 win against Ohio, throwing a hitless final frame.</p><p>Cincinnati junior golfer <strong>Sam Jean</strong> placed third individually at the Spartan Collegiate at Sea Island, Georgia, with a 6-under par total of 210. Indiana senior <strong>Ethan Shepherd</strong> tied for 30th with a score of 218.</p><p>Taylor linebacker <strong>Sam Bolin</strong> had seven tackles in the football team’s 24-10 loss at St. Francis. Junior teammate <strong>Brad Boswell</strong>, a defensive lineman, was credited with a tackle.</p><p>Sophomore <strong>Erica Shepherd</strong> was named Duke’s Student-Athlete of the Week after leading the women’s golf team to a title at the Gamecock Intercollegiate. Shepherd carded a 7-under par total of 209 to earn her first individual collegiate championship.</p><p>Indiana forward <strong>Trayce Jackson-Davis</strong> finished with 12 points and five rebounds a 67-58 loss at Purdue.</p><p>Junior defensive back <strong>Riley Roberts</strong> had five tackles for Rose-Hulman football in its 52-6 win over Defiance. Running back <strong>Alonzo Johnson</strong> carried the ball five times for the Engineers.</p><p>UIndy volleyball player <strong>Emma Jones</strong> had nine kills in the team’s 3-1 triumph over William Jewell and 10 kills and three digs in a loss to Truman State.</p><p>Indiana State volleyball picked up a 3-0 victory at Southern Illinois, with <strong>Ashley Eck</strong> recording eight digs and two services aces and <strong>Jamie Brown</strong> contributing two kills. The Sycamores then downed SIU in four sets, with Eck going for 13 digs.</p><p><strong>Franklin</strong></p><p>Concordia (Wisconsin) junior <strong>Logan Snyder</strong> has been named the NCAC Student-Athlete of the Week in men’s tennis for the second time in his career. Snyder is 3-1 so far this season in singles competition and 4-1 at No. 1 doubles.</p><p>Senior tennis player <strong>Jake Zachary</strong> won his No. 3 singles match for Franklin College against Wabash College, but lost at No. 2 doubles. The Grizzlies lost overall, 7-2.</p><p>Defensive back <strong>Tyce Miller</strong> had a tackle for Rose-Hulman football in a 52-6 defeat of Defiance.</p><p>Lipscomb volleyball won two matches at North Alabama, with freshman setter <strong>Brooke Phillips</strong> totaling 56 assists and 10 digs.</p><p><strong>Greenwood</strong></p><p>Center fielder <strong>T.J. Bass</strong> had a single, a home run and three RBIs in Taylor’s 14-2 win over Goshen. Bass also singled and scored a run in the nightcap, a 6-1 victory.</p><p>UIndy freshman softball player <strong>Dominique Proctor</strong> delivered a double in the team’s 7-0 defeat of West Virginia State.</p><p>Indiana’s <strong>Nick Willham</strong> lost both of his matches at 197 pounds at the Big Ten wrestling championships. Willham lost by scores of 7-1 and 4-0.</p><p><strong>Greenwood Christian</strong></p><p>Franklin College senior <strong>Krae Sparks</strong> pitched the first four innings of the team’s season-opening 12-7 loss to Manchester, allowing seven hits and striking out six.</p><p><strong>Whiteland</strong></p><p>Sophomore pitcher <strong>Luke Helton</strong> got the start in Morehead State’s 13-10 win over Marshall. Helton worked four frames, allowing four hits, walking three and recording a strikeout.</p><p>Indiana Wesleyan pitcher <strong>Danielle Munn</strong> surrendered three hits and struck out 10 in a 4-0 shutout of Point Park.</p><p>Franklin College freshman <strong>Zach Ricketts</strong> shot a career-low 74 in a home loss to Rose-Hulman to tie for third individually.</p><p>St. Francis women’s basketball player <strong>Sidney Crowe</strong> was named honorable mention for the All-Crossroads League team.</p><p><strong>Indian Creek</strong></p><p>Grace College senior pitcher <strong>Dori Knight</strong> took the loss in the team’s 1-0 loss to Madonna, allowing seven hits and striking out eight. Grace lost a 3-2 decision to Concordia (Michigan), with Knight allowing six hits in seven innings and striking out two.</p><p>Sophomore linebacker <strong>Isaiah Lacey</strong> had a tackle for St. Francis in a 24-10 win over Taylor.</p>
