Man who jumped in creek arrested

A Morgantown man was arrested after police say he ran away during a traffic stop, eventually giving up when he jumped into a creek.

The sheriff’s deputy found suspected methamphetamine in the man’s pocket and a smoking device in his vehicle, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Alan M. Barnes, 32, 9014 Spearsville Road, Morgantown, was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of paraphernalia and resisting law enforcement.

On Tuesday afternoon, a deputy spotted a speeding vehicle with a loud exhaust west of Franklin. The deputy started to follow the vehicle driven by Barnes and became suspicious when it pulled into a driveway where he did not live, according to the report.

The vehicle left, and as the deputy caught up to Barnes’ truck, Barnes began to speed even more, according to the report.

The deputy pulled Barnes over on County Road 100S west of Lakehurst Drive. Barnes got out of the truck and ran toward a wooded area, across a road, down an embankment and jumped into a creek, the report said.

That’s when he gave up, the report said.

Deputies found methamphetamine and a glass pipe, the report said.

Barnes was taken to Johnson County jail and held on $5,200 bond.
