Equipment in the basement of Greenwood’s city center was recently damaged from a water leak.
A contractor working on a water line to the city center’s third floor, which is being renovated for businesses that will lease the space, accidentally caused a leak, Greenwood projects manager John Shell said. The contractor quickly fixed the leak and the water didn’t get into other floors or damage the walls, Shell said.
The water poured into the basement, falling on some old equipment, such as printers and computer accessories that were in storage, information technology director Rick Jones said.
The equipment that was damaged was old and not being used, but kept for backup, Jones said. Many of the items would have been sent to auction.
The contractor’s insurance company offered to take the equipment and pay $4,100 for damage. The city board of works accepted the settlement Monday.
Greenwood has been renovating the third floor of the city center building, and part is currently being rented to financial firms. The rent from the offices and lease from the attached PNC Bank are helping reduce the amount of tax dollars needed to pay for operating costs of the building, such as utilities and insurance.
