A local nonprofit group that helps senior citizens get around the county and southside will be able to transport more people.
The Johnson County Community Foundation awarded Johnson County Senior Services a $9,700 grant to help cover the cost of a hydraulic lift van. The foundation awarded more than $76,000 in grant money to local organizations this year.
The total cost of the van is $48,500, with a grant from the Indiana Department of Transportation funding most of the cost. Twenty percent of the van’s price is funded by the foundation grant, Kimberly Smith, Johnson County Senior Services executive director said.
The senior services center currently has one van that can transport senior citizens who use power chairs or have limited mobility, Smith said.
Adding a second one will allow the center to transport more passengers who have mobility issues, she said.
Johnson County Senior Services transports seniors to medical appointments, social events at active adult centers and local senior communities, and nursing homes can ask for help transporting residents to other outings, Smith said.
“We take everyone everywhere,” Smith said.
