Greenwood resident has Olympic aspirations
Zach Cooper is one of 12 divers who will compete in Sunday night’s 10-meter platform finals of the 2016 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials.
An 18-year-old Greenwood resident, Cooper placed fourth in Tuesday’s semifinals with a cumulative score of 768.15;5. The top two divers from Sunday’s finals will make the U.S. Olympic Team.
Former Olympic gold medalist David Boudia is in first place with a score of 1007.25;2. Steele Johnson is in second with 961.80;3, followed by David Dinsmore with 953.90;4.
Cooper and partner Max Showalter will compete in tonight’s finals of the 10-meter platform synchronized event. They are in third place with a cumulative score of 698.46;4.
Boudia and teammate Johnson are in first with a score of 835.56;2.
The top team will make the U.S. Olympic Team.
Franklin athlete up for NCAA honor
Melissa Sanders, a 2016 Franklin College graduate and standout on the women’s tennis team, is a select nominee for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year Award.
Sanders is one of 517 student-athletes, including 169 from Division III schools, nominated for the award.
The award recognizes student-athletes for excellence in academics, service and leadership.
A Columbus North High School graduate, Sanders won Franklin’s Jenny Johnson-Kappes Award as the Grizzlies’ top female athlete for the 2015-16 school year.
