Woman loses $1,800 in rental house scheme

A woman lost $1,800 in a rental home scam in Greenwood.

The woman had recently moved to the area and met earlier this week with a man and woman who had advertised a home for rent online. The couple met her outside the home on Westridge Place in Greenwood, and she gave them $1,800 in cash for the deposit and first month’s rent, according to the Greenwood Police Department report.

The couple had her sign a lease agreement, gave her a key and told her the utilities would be turned on the next day, the report said.

When she went to the home later in the week, a man mowing the lawn told her the home had recently been sold to a management company. The woman was unable to reach the couple she had met with, and the management company told her no one was supposed to be in the home, the report said.

She then contacted police, the report said.

Police looked on social media for the man and woman who had taken her money, but the people they found did not look like the couple the woman had met with, the report said.
