Woman loses $2,000 in scam

A Center Grove area woman lost $2,000 in a phone scam.

The woman reported she received a call from a woman claiming to be her niece Friday night. The caller told her she had been arrested after a friend driving her was stopped and police found drugs in the car, according to the report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

A man then got on the phone and identified himself as being with a police department. He told her she needed to pay $2,000 to get her niece out of jail. The man told her to get four iTunes gift cards for $500 each and give him the card number over the phone, the report said.

Police contacted the bank and found the transactions had been processed, and iTunes said all the cards had been cashed, the report said.
