Departments put out field fire

Local firefighters were called to help extinguish a large brush and field fire west of Columbus.

The fire, which was reported early Wednesday afternoon near the Bartholomew County/Brown County line, was under control by about 4 p.m., firefighters said. Most firefighters left the scene by 6 p.m. The area involved is north of State Road 46, west of Columbus, firefighters said.

Amity, Trafalgar and Brown County firefighters were at the scene, putting out hotspots after the fire was brought under control.

The Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department had a helicopter circling the fire area, estimating it was about a half-mile of property from the east to the west, and about a quarter mile from the south to the north.

Sheriff deputies were on Georgetown Road telling residents about the fire, but no evacuations were ordered.
