Christmas at the zoo: Animals, lights, on display at Indy zoo

The Indianapolis Zoo’s annual winter wonderland, featuring a wild twist on the holiday season is open through the end of the month.

Guests can enjoy evening holiday activities starting at 5 p.m. Dec. 14 to 23 and 26 to 30. The Zoo is open each day from noon to 9 p.m.

Many animals are out enjoying cooler weather this time of year, and visitors can enjoy seeing the tigers, sea lions, red pandas, brown bears, walrus and many others. Animal keepers will be on hand for talks with guests.

As the sun sets, visitors can take a train ride through the zoo and view the lighting displays throughout the exhibits.

Strolling through the zoo, guests can warm up with a cup of hot cocoa, sample delicious holiday treats and enjoy carolers singing by the fireside.

In White River Gardens, families can enjoy Santa’s Tropical Paradise inside the Hilbert Conservatory and participate in the scavenger hunt. Additional activities await at Santa’s Workshop where kids can decorate cookies with Mrs. Claus, write letters to Santa and meet Kris Kringle himself through Dec. 23.

Christmas at the Zoo is free for Zoo members and included with regular admission. Discount tickets are available at participating Donato’s and Teachers Credit Union locations. Guests can receive $1 off admission at the gate with the donation of a new hat, scarf or gloves to benefit St. Mary’s Child Center. Visit IndianapolisZoo.com for advance tickets and more information.
