Roncalli student receives scholarship

A Roncalli High School student was awarded a scholarship meant to honor a late fire fighter.Abby Yohler is the recipient of the $1,500 Private John Lorenzano Memorial Scholarship. Pvt. Lorenzano was killed in the line of duty Feb. 5, 1992, responding to a fire at the Indianapolis Athletic Club.

Yohler’s essay on “What makes you proud that your parent is a firefighter?” was selected over several entries. Her father, Patrick, has been with the Indianapolis Fire Department for 25 years.

Support group planned for parents

Parents with a child recently diagnosed with autism can get help at a support group. Marci Wheeler from the Indiana Resource Center for Autism will present information on the next steps for those recently diagnosed with autism. This meeting is co-sponsored by Special Services Johnson County and the Johnson County Autism Support Group.The meeting is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Feb. 16 at the Earlywood Education Center, 500 Earlywood Drive, Franklin.

College Goal Sunday set to help with Financial Aid

Hoosier students wanting to attend college can get help filling out a vital financial aid form. Financial aid professionals will be at multiple sites across Indiana at 2 p.m. Feb. 12 for College Goal Sunday to help students with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

Locally, students can get assistance at Ivy Tech Community College, 2205 McClain Drive, Franklin.

Students attending should bring their parents, completed tax returns or W-2 forms and information on other income and benefits for everyone submitting information on the FAFSA.

Students and parents are encouraged to apply for their U.S. Department of Education FSA IDs at fsaid.ed.gov before coming to the event.

Nominations accepted for high school hall of fame

Franklin Community High School alumni have a chance to be in their school’s hall of fame. Franklin schools is accepting nominations for its 2017 Hall of Fame.

The Alumni Hall of Fame was created to honor distinguished graduates. The nominee must exemplify the school district’s guiding principles of communication, individual student growth, collaboration, systemic continuous improvement and trust.

The nomination form is available at franklinschools.org. The deadline to submit nominations is March 13.

Volunteers needed for home-school bee

Volunteers are needed to organize a spelling bee for home-schooled students in Johnson County.The winner of the bee would serve as the home-school representative at the 2017 Johnson County Spelling Bee. Johnson County students in grades 3, 4 and 5 are eligible to participate.The home-school spelling bee would need to be conducted before April 8, which is the entry deadline for the county bee.

The Johnson County Spelling Bee will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. April 18 at Creekside Elementary School in Franklin.

Legislator seeks students to be pages

State Rep. Woody Burton, R-Whiteland, is encouraging local students to apply for the Statehouse Page Program. The program gives students ages 13 to 18 the opportunity to interact with lawmakers and see how the government works. Students will get a tour of the Statehouse, including the governor’s office and House, Senate and Supreme Court chambers. Pages also will get a peek at committee meetings and floor sessions. Pages will help Burton with his daily activities.Students interested in serving as a House page should call 1-800-382-9841.

Pages will have an excused absence from school and are responsible for finding their own transportation to and from the Statehouse.

Recommended days to serve are Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays when the House is in session.
