Franklin College February lectures

Franklin College will host a speaker this week who’s talk centers on the topic of cultural recognition and acceptance.

The fifth lecture of the 2016-17 Convocation Lecture Series, while also recognizing Black History Month is titled “Dumb Things Well-Intended People Say: 10 Skills to Increase Your Diversity Competence,” by Maura J. Cullen, Ed.D.

She will speak at 7 p.m. on Feb. 23 in the Branigin Room located in the Napolitan Student Center.

Cullen is considered an authority on diversity issues on college campuses today. Cullen will discuss statements people often make in an effort to be supportive or complimentary but are actually problematic. Meant as joining statements, these remarks often have the opposite effect and end up creating a larger divide.

Participants will gain knowledge of communication traps, how to avoid them and what tools to use in their place.

Admission to the lecture is free and open to the public.

Franklin College tradition includes hosting an annual lecture Series that promotes the ideals of the institution.
