Driver crashes through gate

A vehicle crashed through a gate off U.S. 31 early Sunday morning, and emergency crews used a drone to search for possible crash victims who may have walked away.

The driver, Jerry Trimmell, 68, of Franklin, was injured and trapped in the vehicle, and had to be removed by firefighters. He was somewhat unaware of his location and couldn’t tell emergency crews whether he had a passenger with him, according to reports from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

Firefighters used a drone to search for any other passengers who may have walked away from the scene. No one was found.

Trimmell was taken to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital.

He was driving eastbound on State Road 252 and drove through the intersection at U.S. 31 and crashed through a gate and onto Indiana Department Of Transportation property, hitting an INDOT truck, the sheriff’s office said. The accident happened about 3 a.m. Sunday at 4511 U.S. 31 South.

The accident is under investigation.
