Former mayor to attend State of the Union

The former Franklin mayor who now leads the Indiana Department of Transportation will be attending the State of the Union address today.

Joe McGuinness, who resigned as mayor last year when he was named commissioner of the state department of transportation, will attend the address in Washington, D.C., as a guest of U.S. Rep. Trey Hollingsworth.

The trip also will be a chance for McGuinness to talk with federal lawmakers, he said.

Lawmakers have been interested in Indiana’s recent legislation to dedicate more funding to roadwork, and the state’s five-year plan for roadwork, McGuinness said.

He had hoped to be able to visit lawmakers in Washington D.C. soon, especially as they discuss infrastructure funding at the federal level, he said.
