Indy man arrested on drug charges after traffic stop

What started as a traffic stop in Greenwood due to an unreadable license plate led to a man being arrested on multiple drug-related charges.

Garry R. Smith II, 39, Indianapolis, was charged with possession of a narcotic, trafficking with an inmate, possession of methamphetamine and possession of a controlled substance.

Greenwood police stopped the car he was riding in Sunday night near the intersection of U.S. 31, Madison Avenue and Mercator Drive. Due to the criminal history of the passengers in the vehicle, police had one of their dogs sniff the car to detect if any drugs were inside, the report said.

Officers found hydrocodone pills in the vehicle and suboxone and heroin in Smith’s wallet. At the jail, he had methamphetamine in his pocket and told a jail officer that he did not know if it was real and was on his way to his dealer to discuss that issue, the report said.

Smith, of 5320 Bluff View Drive, Indianapolis, was held at the Johnson County jail on $6,700 bond.
