Plane had fuel issues before emergency landing

Shortly after taking off from an airport in Columbus, a two-person plane began having issues when its engine was not getting the proper amount of fuel.

That’s when pilot David Byers, 55, of Franklin, decided to make an emergency landing in a field off State Road 44, east of Interstate 65 about 2 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

He and his passenger, Leland Byers, 92, also of Franklin, sustained cuts and bruises, but both were able to walk away from the emergency landing, according to the report.

The plane had two, 30-gallon fuel reserve tanks, which were both checked before takeoff. David Byers told investigators he was not sure why the engine was not getting enough fuel, the report said.

Both men declined to be taken to the hospital for treatment. They were checked out by emergency workers at the scene.

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board were called to the scene and are investigating, the report said.
