Legacy award winners named

Seniors who are graduating from Center Grove High School have identified teachers who made the greatest impact on them.

Fifty-seven teachers earned Legacy Awards and will be honored at the district’s teacher celebration.

Award winners are:

Center Grove Elementary School: Connie Allen (retired),  Stephen Blackburn, Rebekah Smith, Terry West (retired) and Peggy Young.

Maple Grove Elementary School: Barb Dunn (retired), Ron Hobson, Courtneigh Marlin and Wendy Schmidt (retired).

North Grove Elementary School: Jenny Ferguson (as a Center Grove Elementary School teacher), Eric Long, Penny Poynter (retired), Joyce Rodgers and Mindy VanderVeen.

Pleasant Grove Elementary School: Tiffany Crabtree, Jennifer Fields, Christy Merchant, Erin Reiss, Debra Shaw and Amy Traut.

Sugar Grove Elementary School: Jodi Barth, Terri Gomez (retired), Susan Henninger, Jason Mueller, Jennifer Ridens and Doug Wooton (retired).

Center Grove Middle School Central: Dan Andersen, Anthony Bell, Paula Boas, Matt Ehresman, Tracy McMahen, Brandon Painter, Susan Porter, Brian Quinlan, Gary Robinson and Jeanne Schwartz.

Center Grove Middle School North: JoAnn Gantz (retired), Chrissy Harmon, Joe Higginson, Rick Miller (retired), Nick Pearson, Jeff Peterson, Dan Stier, Lauren Widbin and Meg Witt.

Roncalli announces students of the month

Roncalli High School has announced its March students of the month.

They are:

Alana Young, business and technology; Shannon Mitchel, fine arts; Nathaniel Comley, social studies; Khi Thu, industrial technology; Samuel Baugh, health and physical education; Ivan Smith, S.T.A.R.S Program; Andrew Gangstad, math; Sarah Hayden, religious studies; Sam Brown, science; Kathleen Ameis, communication; Clark Chapman, English and Jillian Stafford, world languages.

Center Grove student wins award for computing

A Center Grove High School student has received an award celebrating women in computing.

Emily Hoy has received the Indiana Affiliate NCWIT Award for Aspirations in Computing. The award, sponsored by the National Center for Women & Information Technology, OneAmerica, Women & Hi Tech, Society for Information Management – Indianapolis Chapter and Indiana University recognizes high school women for their computing-related achievements and interests as part of an effort to encourage more young women to choose careers in technology.

A total of 23 award recipients and 23 honorable mentions were selected from high schools across the state of Indiana for their outstanding aptitude and interest in information technology and computing. Honorees also displayed solid leadership ability and a good academic history, and have plans for post-secondary education. Each award recipient receives $250 and engraved awards.

Two students receive REMC scholarships

Indian Creek High School senior Morgan Hogue and home school student Nathan Sickmeier are each recipients of a 2018 Johnson County REMC $2,000 academic scholarship.

The scholarships were presented at the Johnson County REMC annual business meeting and are based on academic and personal achievement, and an essay related to an electric industry relevant topic.

Hogue plans to study agricultural communication at Purdue University and Sickmeier will attend IUPUI to study computer engineering.

County autism group hosting kids camp

The Johnson County Autism Support Group will host Camp Can Do, a camp for children with autism-spectrum disorders.

The eighth annual camp will be conducted the weeks of June 11, 18 and 25. Camp times are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday at Whiteland Community High School. Cost is $150 per week.
