MARCO ISLAND, FLORIDA

Paul Joseph and Pauline Markle Carr welcomed their only child, daughter Audrey June, to this world on July 13, 1935, in Indianapolis, Indiana. After decades of accomplishment–her greatest being her daughters Patricia (Patti) Deanne Martin Shumar (Rick) and Priscilla Kay Martin Teixeira (Paulo)– June went to take her “precious Lord’s hand” and “walk with God” on April 30th, 2018. June had two special husbands-Peter Grant Martin, the father of her daughters, and Robert Lowell Bridges, the man she cherished for the last 35 years of her life. Bob joyously embraced June’s family: granddaughters Brooke Shumar Huffman (Bryce), Shannon Shumar Hurley (Ryan), Victoria (Tori) Shumar; grandson Lucas Teixeira; and great grandchildren Cameron Huffman and Landon, Cruze, Hudson, and Davis James Hurley; similarly, June embraced Bob’s: daughter Marsha (Mike) Lafferty; son Stuart (Barb) Bridges; grandchildren, Lauren Lafferty and Todd (Christy) Bridges; and great grandchildren Jensen and Lila Kay Bridges. Together, June and Bob’s “extended” family also included Amanda (Mandy) Martin and her children Krishna and Kailash, as well as Pete Martin (Wally Sheehy) and Mitzi Martin (Jeff Atwood) and many friends in Johnson County, Indiana and Marco Island, Florida.

In addition to a talent for holding many people close to her heart, June was an accomplished homemaker, musician, seamstress and transcriptionist. She graduated from Broad Ripple High School, attended IUPUI and the Jordan School of Music on the corner of Pennsylvania Street and Ft. Wayne Avenue, in Indianapolis (now located on the Butler Campus) in the 1950’s. Her beautiful soprano voice and violin, piano, and organ renditions graced Bargersville Christian Church, First Presbyterian Church in Franklin, North Salem Christian Church in North Salem, IN and St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Marco Island, FL. She was an active member of Matinee Musical in Franklin, and she performed on the “Indiana Roof” of the Indiana Theatre (now the Indiana Repertory Theater) when she was just out of high school.

June, whose skills with fabrics, needles, and threads were unparalleled, was the owner of June’s Kalico Korners where she made custom western wear for many who showed Quarter Horses along with her daughters. Her designs and execution were breathtaking, and for many years she was best in class at local and State 4-H Fair competitions. Her Halloween creations for her family, the Kitchen family, and Mandy were show-stopping. Her wedding and prom creations could have walked the red carpet anywhere.

A gourmet chef was she, too. She never took a shortcut in food preparation. From lasagna to Greek salad to chicken salad crescents to French cream and grog, she was in demand for holiday fare from Indiana to Florida. When she and Bob sold the farm and moved to Florida in 2000, family and friends were not deterred, so she found herself rattling her pots and pans when they appeared to visit and putting her and others’ favorites into a cookbook. Any time she was asked, she enjoyed preparing food for St. Mark’s and the Marco Island Historical Society.

Animals were another of June’s passions, so she made sure that her daughters were able to reach the top of their classes in their endeavors to show horses throughout Indiana and beyond. Although she owned many dogs and cats during her lifetime, her last cat, Kiwi, was known as her “best friend”.

The medical profession provided June financial support throughout her life as well as emotional and physical support as she confronted life’s final challenges. She worked at Johnson Memorial and Hendricks Memorial Hospital before entering the world of internet-based transcription services, retiring 10 years ago. A visionary in her field, in the early 70s’s, June started her own business, providing transcription services for physicians’ offices, including 24-hour pickups and deliveries. June occasionally displayed her Super Bowl-worthy typing skills when the type-ball on her IBM Selectric would go airborne–resembling Sputnik orbiting the Earth.

June was a member of Tri Kappa in Franklin, IN; Eastern Star Pittsboro, IN; St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Marco Island, FL; and The Marco Island Historical Society.

In addition to her beloved Bob, June is survived by her entire extended family listed above.

Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home in Franklin, Indiana, is handling arrangements. A procession will depart for Harris Cemetery in Union Township, Bargersville, from the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 12. Pallbearers are Lucas Teixeira, Cameron Huffman, Paulo Teixeira, Bryce Huffman, and Jeff Atwood. All are welcome to attend the graveside service at 11:30 p.m. A celebration of June’s life will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Marco Island, FL, later this summer.

June requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Redlands Christian Migrant Association or Habitat for Humanity.
