High school football: Week 8 previews

Franklin (2-5) at Greenwood (1-6)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Radio: KORN Country (100.3 FM)

Recent history: The Woodmen have won three straight in this series and nine of 10, including last year’s narrow 12-10 victory at Franklin.

Last week:  Franklin lost in overtime to Plainfield, 40-39; Greenwood lost at Decatur Central, 40-18

Sagarin ratings: Franklin 53.93 (123rd), Greenwood 53.91 (124th)

Players to watch: Franklin — QB Drew Byerly, WR/RB Noah Crow, WR Cory Richards, LB Clayton Coll, DB/KR Tyce Miller; Greenwood — QB Oliver Rau, RB Nick Willham, WR Luke Raker, LB Dillon Cloyd, LB Bryce Taylor

What to look for: Take a look at those Sagarin ratings, will you? It’s tough to find two teams more closely matched than this on paper. The Grizzly Cubs almost took down a much stronger Greenwood team last year; can they get over the top on the Woodmen’s home field? Greenwood’s defense hasn’t held an opponent under 35 points since August and will likely need to keep Franklin well under that number to win.

Center Grove (4-3) at Lawrence North (2-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: centergrovefootball.com

Recent history: The Trojans are 18-1 against the Wildcats under Eric Moore and have won the last 12 meetings, the last two by shutout (16-0 last year, 14-0 in 2016).

Last week: Center Grove won at Pike, 51-30; Lawrence North lost at Warren Central, 72-25

Sagarin ratings: Center Grove 97.23 (sixth), Lawrence North 78.21 (38th)

Players to watch: Center Grove — QB Jackson Moore, RB Carson Steele, RB/KR Charlie Ogega, DL Lucas Hunter, LB Gabe Boyd; Lawrence North — QB Donaven McCulley, RB Keyshawn Smith, WR Joseph Wills, DB Rowland Smith, K Conner Benson

What to look for: Life in the MIC has been rough on the Wildcats, who opened the year with two easy wins but haven’t sniffed the same success in league play. The Trojans appear to have gotten back on track these last two weeks and should be able to ride their ground game to a third straight win. Steele has 495 yards rushing over the past two games.

Whiteland (5-2) at Plainfield (4-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The Warriors had won six in a row before the Quakers emerged victorious in a 50-47 shootout last season.

Last week: Whiteland lost to Mooresville, 21-17; Plainfield beat Franklin in overtime, 40-39

Sagarin ratings: Whiteland 78.21 (38th), Plainfield 67.77 (65th)

Players to watch: Whiteland — QB Austin Kirkman, RB Jake Perry, DL Alex Reed, LB Jacob Schultz, DB Trevor Larence; Plainfield — QB Aiden Moyers, RB Tavian Gadia, WR Cade Ritter, LB Jacob Platt, DB Colin Dorsett

What to look for: Both teams are coming off of dramatic games last week. Will the Warriors be able to regroup mentally after a last-minute loss? Containing Gadia, who had a big night at Franklin, will be critical for Whiteland if it hopes to get itself back on track and assure itself of a winning season.

Cloverdale (2-5) at Indian Creek (4-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The Braves won 34-0 last year and 49-8 in the teams’ first matchup two seasons ago.

Last week: Cloverdale won at Owen Valley, 56-7; Indian Creek beat Cascade, 45-14

Sagarin ratings: Cloverdale 25.84 (242nd), Indian Creek 54.86 (120th)

Players to watch: Cloverdale — QB/DB Parker Watts, RB/LB Jake Wilkes, RB/LB Logan Abner, RB/DB Jake Smith, LB Caydhan Stevens; Indian Creek — QB/DB Isaiah Lacey, RB Avery Welch, OL/DL Kenny Edwards, LB Tony Hall, LB Bryce Smith

What to look for: This hasn’t been a particularly competitive matchup the past two years and probably shouldn’t be again, although the Clovers have a particularly interesting two-way threat in Wilkes, who has 18 tackles for loss and is the team’s leader in all-purpose yardage. A win by the Braves would wrap up a third WIC East championship in as many years.

Wes-Del (1-6) at Edinburgh (0-7)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The Warriors rolled to a 56-12 victory a year ago to avenge the Lancers’ 28-26 triumph in 2016.

Last week: Wes-Del beat Tindley, 42-13; Edinburgh lost at Eastern Greene, 57-8

Sagarin ratings: Wes-Del 16.06 (268th), Edinburgh minus-5.05 (314th)

Players to watch: Wes-Del — QB/LB Mason Whitted, WR/LB Jake Sutton, WR/DB Caeden McClaughry, OL/LB Jordan Lehman; Edinburgh — QB Tyson Sackman, RB/LB Bryce Burton, WR/LB Austin Streeval, WR/DB Hunter Dean, OL/DL Ethan Armel

What to look for: The Warriors employ a variety of weapons, frequently using two quarterbacks and spreading the ball around to a number of different targets. The Wes-Del defense has shown some vulnerabilities at times; can the Lancers get their offense going again after struggling against their two most difficult opponents? With the Week 9 game cancelled, Edinburgh needs a strong showing this week to generate momentum for sectional play.

Bloomington South (3-4) at Roncalli (2-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: rebelmedianetwork.com

Recent history: The two schools haven’t faced one another since splitting a home-and-home series in 1989 and 1990.

Last week: Bloomington South lost to Columbus North, 52-35; Roncalli beat Bloomington North, 31-14

Sagarin ratings: Bloomington South 70.91 (60th), Roncalli 70.46 (63rd)

Players to watch: Bloomington South — QB Trent Richardson, RB Maveric Thiery, WR Sean Azcui, DL Avery Thompson, DB Maddix Blackwell; Roncalli — QB Aidan Leffler, RB Elijah Mahan, WR Luke Dill, DL John Harris, DB Jacob Denney

What to look for: The Panthers boast one of the top-scoring offenses in Class 5A, but they’ve been fairly generous on defense, giving up 35 points or more five times this season. If the Rebels can keep Thiery and Azcui contained, it should have a solid chance in this battle between two very different but evenly-matched teams.
