Braves lose to Danville in sectional title match

Indian Creek’s volleyball season came to an end Saturday night with a loss in the title match of the Class 3A sectional at Tri-West.

Playing Danville for the first time this season, the Braves came up short, 25-18, 25-23, 25-18.

Indian Creek finished with a record of 18-12.

“We were digging everything they were throwing at us,” first-year Braves coach Andi Ferris said. “Our biggest problem is we had nine service errors, and that just kills you in a close match.”

Seniors Taylor Burkett and Morgan Frash each had nine kills against Danville; senior setter Malea Brownfield finished with 27 assists.

The Braves qualified for Saturday’s final by defeating Indianapolis Herron, 25-8, 25-13, 25-13, in the morning semifinal. In that match, Brownfield contributed 24 assists, Burkett nine kills and junior outside hitter Avery Hensley seven kills.

Ferris, the fourth Indian Creek volleyball coach in as many years, was proud of how her seniors succeeded this season despite yet even more change.

“At first it was difficult trying to find chemistry. We found it about halfway through the season, but the hard part about that is at one point we played 28 sets in six days,” Ferris said. “I thought at sectional we played as well as we could and was really proud of the kids.

“The seniors have won 66 matches in their four years. I would think that might be the most ever from a class here. Good for them for sticking it out for four years.”
