Woman pulled from water, pronounced dead at scene

An elderly woman died after she was pulled from the river behind her house on Thursday.

Trafalgar Fire Department medics tried to revive Judith A. Metcalfe, 73, 7891 South Sawmill Court, but were not successful, according to a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

There was no sign of foul play, sheriff’s deputies and deputy county coroner Mark Riley said.

Metcalfe’s husband, Ronald, said he was raking leaves outside the house about 3 p.m. when Metcalfe told him she was going for her routine walk. Metcalfe had dementia and rheumatoid arthritis, he told deputies.

When he noticed his wife hadn’t returned from getting the mail, he went searching for her. Neighbors had brought her home twice in the past year, the report said.
