Two people charged with possession credit card skimming equipment

Police officers looking to serve an out-of-state warrant found a credit card skimming operation in Greenwood that spanned multiple states and involved more than 200 stolen credit cards.

Mayara Martinez, 27 and Norge Rodriguez-Leon, 37, both of Greenwood, have been charged with possession of a card skimming device, after police found multiple card skimmers, a notebook with Indianapolis gas station addresses and 229 credit card numbers in their apartment. Rodriguez—Leon was also charged with possession of a controlled substance.

A Greenwood police officer received a tip from an investigator in Illinois on Feb. 12 that people with warrants were likely living at 1744 Feather Reed Lane in Greenwood, according to a probable cause affidavit.

On Feb. 22, officers went to the home to serve the arrest warrants. No one answered the door, so officers forced their way into the home, according to the affidavit.

Officers searched the home and found the front panel of a gas pump, multiple stacks of gift cards, multiple card skimming devices, computers and machines that read and write credit card numbers, the affidavit said.

The card skimming devices found are typically placed in a gas pump and used to capture credit and debit card numbers when people pumping gas use their cards at the pumps, the officer wrote in the affidavit.

A stack of credit cards and a driver’s license from Tennessee were found under a mattress in the home. The driver’s license had Rodriguez-Leon’s photograph but had another name on it, according to the affidavit.

Officers also found several controlled substances and methamphetamine in the home, the affidavit said.

A notebook with addresses of gas stations in the Indianapolis area was found. A secret service agent went to the addresses and found six card skimming devices installed in those gas pumps, according to the affidavit.

A flash drive that had 229 credit card numbers and multiple addresses were also found in the home. Seventeen of the addresses were out of state, the affidavit said.

Possession of a card skimming device is a level six felony.
