Indian Creek baseball falls to Edgewood

The Edgewood baseball team arrived late to Indian Creek because of traffic issues Tuesday.

Despite the inconvenience of extra bus time, the Mustangs stunned the Braves 8-2 in a battle of ranked teams —Indian Creek entered the game at No. 7 with the Mustangs just a notch behind at No. 8.

More important, Edgewood (6-1) gets its first Western Indiana Conference win while Indian Creek drops to 1-1 in the conference and 6-2 overall.

So far this season, both teams have had a lot of firepower.

Edgewood has been averaging 11 runs a game, while the Braves, coming off their second straight Johnson County tournament championship, entered the game with 72 runs (10.3 per game).

Nobody scored any runs Tuesday until the third inning, when Edgewood opened up the scoring with two runs, thanks to a pair of singles and a pair of errors.

It got a bit worse for Indian Creek in the next frame as the Mustangs slipped in three more hits and were also aided by a pair of walks, four stolen bases, two passed balls and another error.

The end result was four runs and starting pitcher Trevor Ankney getting pulled.

Ankney had only surrendered four hits and had struck out six, but also had three walks and generally couldn’t buy a break on the infield hits (Edgewood had three).

Nor was he helped by his batters.

Indian Creek had only two hits when Ankney was on the mound and three total, fanning 10 times.

The Braves made things exciting in the bottom half of the fourth, loading the bases on relief pitcher Cooper Thacker with no outs, but they could only muster a single unearned run. They did the same in the sixth, and that was it.

One thing Indian Creek will need to address is that the Mustangs had a staggering 12 stolen bases. It has less than 24 hours to fix that problem, as the teams will battle it out again today, this time at Edgewood.
